Shanghai Cowgirl

WE ARE SORRY TO REPORT THAT OUR BELOVED SHANGHAI COWGIRL IS NOW:
CLOSED!

The location is now a restaurant called: ROCK LOBSTER

I love this cozy diner. It’s worn wooden floors, candles in water glasses, and good music make it an inviting place to catch up with friends. Though popular with the Queen West post-drinking crowd (open until 4am Friday and Saturday), it never seems rowdy. It’s a chill atmosphere, with young and friendly staff.

Waiting for the waitress to take our order, I kept amused by admiring the original artwork on the walls. Beautiful nude abstracts, fanciful and dream-like.

Known for being delicious more than health conscious, they have an “ALMOST HEALTHY” selection on the menu. I didn’t order from there. I went straight to “THINGS MOM USED TO MAKE” section.

Cost of this meal:
$34

Ghetto Chicken

12.25

My favourite Shanghai Cowgirl indulgence. Battered chicken breast and thighs, deep fried until it’s a rich crispy golden brown. It’s then drenched in a flavorful gravy, topped with thick slices of fried mushrooms. A small sprinkling of green onion tops it off.

Simple and sinfully delicious.

With it came homemade mashed potatoes, not the fluffy or creamy kind. The kind your mother (or possibly grandmother) made – with substance! Thick, filling and delicious.

Liver and Onions
10.95

There are few things I won’t eat – cow liver makes the list. However, my father has always enjoyed the dish and never could find a place that made it to his liking. Though I didn’t venture a taste, he insists it’s delicious!

Poutine

7.25
[side order portion available]

Not the traditional poutine. Cheddar instead of cheese curds. However, the fries are slim, and freshly made to order. Their crispness works well with the richly delicious gravy

Cappuccino

I love a good coffee. The cappuccino’s are small, but the foam is as rich as the espresso.
